Furnace and heat pump installation for Piedmont winters
The Carolina Piedmont is heat pump country. Winters are mild enough that a heat pump does the work efficiently for most of the season, and the only real question is what happens on the handful of nights it drops below freezing. That answer — straight heat pump, dual fuel, or gas furnace — depends on your house and what fuel already runs to it.

Decide the system type first
Heat pump, dual fuel or gas furnace. If gas already runs to the house, dual fuel is often the best answer here: the heat pump handles the mild majority of the season and the furnace picks up the cold nights.
Size it to the house
The same load calculation we run for cooling, applied to the heating side. Oversized heating equipment short-cycles, wears out its ignition components early and leaves you with cold spots anyway.
Installation and venting
New equipment set, gas and condensate lines run properly, venting brought to current code, and the electrical checked and corrected where needed. High-efficiency furnaces need their own venting — this is where corner-cutting shows up years later.
Commissioning and inspection
Gas pressure set, combustion analysed, airflow measured, and the thermostat configured for the equipment actually installed rather than left on factory defaults. Permit filed and inspection scheduled.
What a heating replacement costs
Gas furnace replacements generally run $4,200–$8,500 installed. Heat pump systems run $5,500–$11,000 depending on tier and whether the air handler is being replaced with it. Dual-fuel setups sit at the top of that range but usually return the difference over a decade of Piedmont winters. Every quote is written, itemised, and good for 30 days.
