Ductwork and airflow: the room that's always hot
A duct system in a Charlotte attic or crawlspace typically loses 20 to 30 percent of the air it carries before that air reaches a room. You paid to condition all of it. If one bedroom has never been comfortable in the whole time you have lived there, the odds are strongly against the equipment being at fault — and installing a bigger system will not fix it.

Measure, then look
We measure static pressure and airflow at the equipment and at the registers, then physically inspect the runs. Static pressure tells us whether the system is fighting the ductwork — a number most repair calls never take.
Find the return-air problem
Undersized returns are epidemic in homes built here before 2000. A system that cannot breathe in cannot push out, and adding supply registers to a house with one central return makes the problem worse rather than better.
Seal, support, insulate
Mastic or UL-listed foil tape at every joint — never cloth duct tape, which dries out and lets go within a few years. Sagging runs re-supported, crushed flex replaced, and insulation brought back up where an attic that hits 140°F in August has degraded it.
Zoning where it's the right answer
For a two-storey house with a single system, zoning with motorised dampers and a second thermostat is often cheaper and better than a second system. We say when it is, and when it isn't.
What duct work costs
Targeted sealing and rebalancing runs $650–$1,800 for most homes. Replacing an entire duct system in a crawlspace or attic runs $3,500–$9,000 depending on the size of the house and access. Adding a zoning system to an existing two-storey setup runs $2,200–$4,500. Duct work is unglamorous and it is frequently the highest-return money in the entire system.
